MUAY THAI - INTRO
Muay Thai is a martial art that originated in Thailand that uses stand-up striking combined with clinching techniques. This discipline is very similar to kickboxing and is called "the art of eight limbs" because it is characterized by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees, shins and feet.
The class will run twice a week and is designed as an introduction to our general Muay Thai classes. This class is designed for people with absolutely no experience.
Here we will cover the basics to get you ready for the general class including:
-How to stand
-How to begin to move correctly
-Throw a punch, kick, knee and elbow
-How to block, slip and roll with punches
-How to check kicks
-How to parry kicks
-How to hold pads
Once your instructor is satisfied you can apply the above techneiques you will be invited up to the general classes.
For this class you will need shin guards, 16 ounce boxing gloves, and a mouth guard, we can supply gloves and shin guards for trial students only.
Please book in advance for these classes as they run when required.
These classes run for 1 hour.
I have no Boxing, Kickboxing or Muay Thai experience, is that a problem?
-No problem at all. In this class we will start to teach you basic skills and combinations in a safe environment. This class is suitable for people with absolutely no experience. The more advanced students will work together on more advanced drills and combinations, while the beginners students will be moving at a slower pace.
I'm not comfortable getting hit, will I be okay in this class?
-In the Muay Thai class we regularly spar and do contact drills. You will never be forced to spar if you are not comfortable. You will find our team are happy to work with you and work to your level. But if contact really isn't your thing try out Kickboxing fitness classes.
Do I Need a partner?
-Starting training at a new gym can be fun with a friend, but you do not have a organise to have a partner for each class. Just come on in.
I don't want to hold the rest of the class back.
-These classes are suitable for people with absolutely no experience in any martial art. Do not put off starting in these classes because you think you are 'unfit' this will improve in these classes. You will go along and improve at your own pace
What equipment do I need?
-You do not need to have your own equipment when you are getting started. We will provide gloves and shin guards to trial students. Once you have decided you want to continue in our program most students purchase their own 16 oz boxing gloves, hand wraps, shin-guards and a mouth guard. We stock all these items at reception.
All you will need is comfortable workout clothes, (shorts and a t-shirt) the class will run barefoot on mats.
I'm Happy training and have no real desire to compete, is this a problem?
-If you do want to compete, great, but you will never be pressured into fighting.
